What to Expect at Your MRI Appointment
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) gives doctors detailed images of the body and its internal structures, making them essential in medical diagnostics.
These scans help doctors detect medical conditions, injuries and diseases and can help provide information that will aid an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
At PRP Imaging, we prioritise patient care and comfort. We choose to use the latest MRI technology to provide high-quality imaging services delivered in a way that is most comfortable for patients. Our experienced team is dedicated to providing a smooth and informed experience during your MRI appointment and our recent investments in imaging advancement software allow for the majority of MRI examinations to be performed in under 10mins.
Whether you’re a patient looking for a diagnosis, you have a family member or friend on a medical journey, or you’re simply seeking information on MRI procedures, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
What is an MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) uses a powerful magnet, radio waves, and a computer to create detailed images of the body’s internal structures.
Unlike X-rays, MRI doesn’t use ionising radiation. The process involves lying inside a tube-like machine where the magnetic field and radio waves interact with the body’s hydrogen atoms, producing cross-sectional images that help doctors see inside the body.
Common Reasons for an MRI Scan
MRI scans can be used to diagnose a wide range of conditions. They’re particularly useful for examining the brain, spinal cord, joints, and soft tissues.
Doctors often order MRIs to detect tumours, assess muscle and tendon injuries, assess nerves, investigate chronic pain, or monitor conditions like multiple sclerosis.
It’s a non-invasive procedure that provides critical information for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment planning.
Before Your MRI Appointment
To prepare for your MRI appointment, you should wear comfortable clothing without metal fastenings. Avoid jewellery, hairpins, and other metallic items. For safety reasons you will be asked multiple times about metallic items you may have had implanted in your body. It is likely that you will be changed into a medical gown for the procedure.
Fasting (going without food) for an MRI procedure might be required in some cases. When you make your MRI appointment, you will be advised of any fasting requirements.
Your medical history
Before your procedure starts, you should tell the MRI technician about your medical history, including any implants, pacemakers, or metal fragments in your body.
You should also disclose if you have any anxiety or concerns, such as claustrophobia. This will help the technician make the necessary adjustments for your comfort.
What to bring
Bring your referral form, Medicare or private health information, and any previous imaging relating to the area being scanned.
Having these documents will make sure the MRI process goes smoothly and efficiently.
During Your MRI Scan
When you arrive, you may need to change into a gown and remove any metal objects.
You’ll then lie on a movable table that slides into the MRI machine. The technician will position you comfortably and give you earplugs or headphones. The table then slides into the MRI tunnel for the scan.
Staying comfortable and calm
You can expect to hear some loud thumping and tapping sounds during the scan, but don’t worry — this is completely normal.
The scan itself is painless, though you might feel a slight warmth. With recent software advancements and investments that PRP have made across our fleet of scanners, most MRI scans are now as short as 10mins of scan time, although there are some longer scans that can take over 30 mins.
To stay comfortable, keep your eyes closed and focus on your breathing. Listening to the music provided by the headphones can also help.
You can communicate with the technician through the provided intercom if you need any assistance or reassurance during your scan.
After Your MRI Appointment
Once the MRI scan is done, the technician will help you off the table. You can change back into your clothes and collect your belongings.
There are no restrictions on your post-scan activities, so you can get back to your normal routine right away.
Receiving your results
A Radiologist will analyse the MRI images and send a detailed report to your referring doctor. This process typically takes 1-2 business days..
Your doctor will then discuss the results with you in a follow-up appointment and explain any findings.
Post-scan care and follow-up
There’s usually no specific post-scan care required. However, if you received a contrast dye agent, you should drink plenty of water to help flush it from your system.
You should follow any additional instructions provided by your healthcare provider and schedule a follow-up appointment to discuss your results and next steps.
Common Questions About MRI Scans
Can I eat or drink before an MRI?
For most MRI scans, you can eat and drink normally. However, some specific types of scans might require you to fast beforehand. You should follow any instructions provided by our staff.
Will the MRI scan hurt?
The MRI scan is painless. You might feel a little uncomfortable lying still or hearing the noise of the machine, but it should not be painful. Be sure to use the intercom to communicate with the MRI technician and let them know if you feel any discomfort.
What if I’m claustrophobic?
If you know that you suffer from severe claustrophobia, you should tell your doctor before your appointment. They may give you a mild sedative to help you stay calm.
Are MRI scans safe for everyone?
MRI scans are safe for most people. However, they aren’t recommended for patients with certain implants, pacemakers, or metal fragments in their bodies. If you are pregnant, you should discuss having an MRI scan with your referring clinician prior to a referral being made. Always let your doctor and MRI technician know if you have any medical devices or implants.
How long does an MRI scan take?
Most common MRI scans typically take 10–20 minutes, although some scans can take more than 30mins depending on the area being scanned.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
Yes, you can bring someone with you for support. However, they’ll need to wait outside the scan room during the procedure. A parent of guardian of a young child will be appropriately screened for metal and may stay in the MRI room if necessary.
Will I have to get a dye injection?
Some MRI scans require a contrast agent called gadolinium. Your doctor will determine if it’s necessary based on the type of scan you have and the information needed. If contrast dye is required, it will be administered through a small injection.
Tips for a Smooth MRI Experience
If you’re feeling anxious about your MRI procedure, you can practice deep breathing and visualisation techniques.
Let your doctor and MRI technician know if you feel nervous — they’ll do whatever they can to help you out and keep you feeling comfortable throughout the entire procedure.
You should follow all the instructions provided by our staff. This includes dietary restrictions, medication adjustments, and preparation guidelines.
Don’t hesitate to ask your MRI technician questions if you’re unsure about any part of the procedure.
